The Story: David Copperfield is written as an autobiography, with David as narrator replaying the important (and some not-so-important) memories of his life. From his unfortunate birth (in which he disappointed his aunt by not being a girl), to his unhappy childhood (which reminded me of Jane Eyre) to his triumphs and failures as an adult, David Copperfield leaves no stone unturned.
The Opening Line: Whether I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show.
What I Loved: Compared to Great Expectations, David Copperfield has a much easier level of accessibility. Immediately readable, the book almost feels like the reader gets to peek into David’s Diary. It isn’t broken up into the diary-like sections authors are so fond of today, but each chapter is short and the reader is the recipient of a veritable fount of knowledge, large details and small.
What I Didn’t Love: You know what I dislike? Spoilers. Want to take a guess at the one thing that bothered me more than anything else in this novel? That’s right, the illustrations. On their own merit, the illustrations were great. And it was a relief to get to an illustration, only if for the bit of a breather it provided. But…..the placement of illustrations is what I have a problem with. Why in the world would anyone place an illustration that provides a major spoiler 20-30 pages before that event actually happens???? This occurred over and over, and by the end I just wished I had read an unillustrated version.
Final Thoughts: Okay, okay. You all really just want to know who won, right? Well…and no surprises here….it was me! I believe Katie still has about 100 pages to go, which seems to be the trend in these challenges. I really thought this would be the one where she trampled me, though. I had a huge stats project for my church I was working on, plus my normal job. What the heck, Katie?? Anyway, I think our next challenge won’t be until the New Year. So she has plenty of time to prepare. And plenty of time to buy the new pillow that I claim as my prize. 🙂

Congratulations! It sounds like this was a decent classic to read, but too bad about the illustrations. I have a copy of the book, so now I’m going to check to see if it has illustrations too.
